Sony KLV-17HR1 LCD TV Review

Sony has at last entered the LCD TV market with the launch of the KLV-17HR1. The suave 17in widescreen display delivers XGA (1280 x 768) resolution and is propped up by a sleek support which allows the screen to recline. Manual controls are discreetly positioned on the right side of the frame, ensuring that the fascia is kept free from buttons. All connections are found behind a panel at the back of the set. There's only one RGB Scart, which is a problem if looking to hook up more than one piece of kit using the standard. But there are S-video and composite video alternatives, as well as stereo phono input. An RF input pipes analogue TV signals into the set.

Auto tuning of analogue channels is speedy, while the onscreen menu is almost as beautiful as the set itself. Tweaks to contrast, brightness, colour and sharpness and activation of one of three colour tones can only be made when the Personal picture mode is selected. Elsewhere the Live and Movie picture modes provide preset adjustments and both treble and bass can be personalised.

With high-quality RGB signals from a DVD player, the KLV-17HR1's pictures are impressive. Bold colours with natural tints are trapped by tight edges amidst high levels of background detail. There's not a trace of ghosting, noise or grain, and image lag is at a bare minimum. The pictures are supported by lively Nicam stereo output.

This is a welcome addition to the LCD TV market. It's devilishly good-looking with performance to match.
