Compare DLP TVs to Direct View,
Projection and Plasma Screen TVs.

Now is an exciting time to be shopping for a TV. Truly top-notch picture quality continues to become more affordable — thanks in part to technologies that weren't even available five years ago! If your home is like most, the TV is the audio/video component that gets the most use. What you can learn here in just a few minutes could dramatically increase your viewing pleasure for years to come.

Whether you're looking for a 20" model for the bedroom or a 70" HDTV for a family-room home theater, you want your TV to do a good job displaying your primary programming source, whether that's an antenna, cable, or satellite signal. And you also want to make the most of all your other video sources: DVD movies, videotapes, video games, etc.

Television Screen Type

Traditional tube-type TVs are still the most popular kind, but they're facing serious competition in the large-screen arena from rear-projection models, and in small- to medium-sized screens from flat-panel TVs. Here's how the three types stack up:

Direct-view CRT: CRT (cathode-ray tube) TVs are what most of us watch. Their sharp, bright images provide a vivid viewing experience in virtually all rooms and lighting conditions. Size: Up to 40". Technology: Built around a single large CRT ("picture tube") — a specialized vacuum tube in which images are created when an electron beam scans back and forth across the back side of a phosphor-coated screen.

Rear-projection: "Big-screen" TVs produce clear, sharp pictures that look best when viewed straight on, from a seated position. The picture looks dimmer if you're viewing from the side, or standing up. Although their cabinets have slimmed down in recent years, RPTVs (rear-projection TVs) still take up more space than direct-view TVs, and their larger screens require greater viewing distance for optimum results. Size: 42" to 70". Technology: The recent introduction and growing popularity of rear-projection DLP and LCD TVs has radically changed the big-screen TV market. These "tabletop" TVs have cabinets that are shallow and lightweight compared to conventional big-screen models, which use three small CRTs (one each for red, green, and blue).

Plasma Televisions: Plasma Tvs create bright, crisp images without using traditional picture tubes. These super-slim, wall-mountable TVs use either plasma or LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panels. In the past two years, LCD and plasma panels have improved dramatically in the areas of resolution, brightness, and contrast ratio. Size: Up to 40" for LCD; up to 63" for plasma. Technology: LCD and plasma screen technologies are fundamentally different from traditional CRT technology.

DLP TV RESOURCES, REVIEWS AND BUYING TIPS
DLP technology is the only display solution that enables an entirely digital connection between a graphic or video source and the screen in front of you. The result is a picture whose clarity, brilliance and color must be seen to be believed.
